Homemade bombs found on the slope outside Wah Yan College in Wan Chai (Updated 11.30pm)


9th December 2019 – (Hong Kong) At around 5pm today, two homemade bombs were found by a staff on the slope outside Wah Yan College on Queen’s Road East in Wan Chai. Police were notified and they rushed to the scene to cordon off the area. Team from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau (EOD) was deployed to inspect the bombs.

Police found 2 black bags containing homemade bombs with two remote controllers. The bombs contained Ammonium Nitrate, a widely used bulk industrial explosive.

Police sealed off the road near Tang Shiu Kin Hospital as a precautionary measure. Over 10 riot police were on standby at the scene. There were no students at the college when the incident took place. Meanwhile, the school authority has not announced if the classes will be cancelled tomorrow.

At 10pm, Police’s Senior Bomb Disposal Officer Alick MCWHIRTER and Senior Superintendent LI Kwai-wah of Organized Crime and Triad Bureau gave a briefing to the media regarding the bombs found at Wah Yan College, Hong Kong. Senior Superintendent LI Kwai-wah said that the bombs were connected to a mobile phone and nails were found inside them. A similar bomb was also found in Mong Kok this year and police are currently investigating if both cases are connected. According to EOD, if the bombs were detonated, the fatal explosion could reach an area of 50-100 metres.
