HKUST graduates shout slogans during graduation ceremony, hundreds clad in black march on campus and vandalise walls

7th November 2019 – (Hong Kong) Graduation ceremony was held at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) at 10.30am today. Student Union criticised the University for refusing to invite Student Senator, Poon to attend the graduation ceremony. The students urged graduates not to bow to Andrew Liao, the President of the University Board on stage as a gesture of protest.

Several students clad in black distributed flyers at the beginning of the graduation ceremony this morning. Many graduates shouted the five demands when the national anthem was played. President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Wei Shyy mentioned the student, Chow who fell from the car park in Tseung Kwan O and expressed his support for him and his family.

During the ceremony, several students clad in masks went on stage without taking a bow to Andrew Liao.

At 1pm, around 30 students clad in black gathered at Piazza of HKUST and held a giant banner which says ‘Investigate police brutality, return the truth to Chow’. Their antics have obstructed other students from observing the graduation ceremony. Security guards arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Meanwhile at 1.30pm, over a few hundred students clad in black started to march around the campus and vandalised the walls.
