17th February 2023 – (Hong Kong) Recently, the AI chatbot “ChatGPT” has garnered global attention due to its ability to write professional-level articles under the guidance of users. This has led to some students attempting to use AI tools for completing homework and other assessments. However, the University of Hong Kong has now banned the use of “ChatGPT” or other AI-related tools in classrooms, homework, and assessments on campus. In case of usage, the students must obtain written permission from the course lecturer or face plagiarism charges.
Ian Holliday, Vice President (Teaching) of HKU, stated that the university is planning to conduct a campus-wide discussion on artificial intelligence, but it is challenging to change the policy abruptly in the middle of the semester. Therefore, short-term measures are being taken to deal with the issue. He also mentioned that using ChatGPT or similar programs without authorisation could involve “deception” and be considered potential plagiarism. Teachers have been reminded to remain vigilant and use supplementary oral and classroom examinations to detect students who use such tools.
HKU is the first university in Hong Kong to prohibit the use of AI software, citing concerns about academic integrity and potential misconduct. Although AI technology has undoubtedly made life more convenient, its abuse could threaten the traditional values of higher education. Thus, HKU’s decision serves as a reminder to students and teachers that AI tools should be used ethically and with proper authorisation.
