3rd September 2026 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory said it will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tomorrow, 4th September, as Tropical Cyclone Saudel approaches the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary and local winds remain occasionally strong offshore and on high ground under the combined influence of Saudel and the northeast monsoon. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will stay in force today and the public are advised to keep abreast of the latest bulletins.
Saudel made landfall over Zhangzhou in Fujian and is forecast to move west across inland areas of eastern Guangdong later today, weakening as it tracks. While the system is expected to edge closer to the estuary tomorrow, forecasters cautioned that the extent of any weakening remains uncertain. The decision on a possible No. 3 signal will hinge on Saudel’s intensity near the estuary, the reach of its stronger winds and evolving local wind conditions.
For today, sunny periods are expected with a maximum temperature around 31 degrees and one or two showers developing later. Winds will be moderate to fresh north‑westerlies, occasionally strong offshore and on elevated terrain, and swells are anticipated along the coast.
Looking ahead, conditions are likely to remain windier with swells tomorrow. From the weekend into early next week, sunny intervals and a few showers are forecast, with weather gradually improving under a continental airstream and showers easing across southern China. Elsewhere, Tropical Cyclone Krovanh is moving towards the Ryukyu Islands and is expected to linger in that region over the coming days.
The Observatory reiterated that the No. 3 signal is considered when sustained strong winds are affecting or expected to affect a broad area of Hong Kong near sea level for a period, and any escalation will be announced through official channels. Members of the public should stay alert to coastal hazards from swells and observe all safety advice.
