21st May 2022 – (Hong Kong) Dr. Albert Au from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced at 4.30pm today that there were 228 COVID-19 cases today comprising 103 confirmed via nucleic acid tests and 125 cases confirmed via Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) online declaration platform. 16 of the cases were imported today. 5 tested positive at temporary sampling station at the airport. 17 of them tested positive at designated quarantine hotels. They arrived from U.S., Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, U.A.E, Indonesia, Panama, France, Russia and Spain.
A total of 1,197,528 COVID-19 cases have been recorded since the beginning of the fifth wave.
Among the newly 103 confirmed cases via nucleic acid tests today, 23 were confirmed by the Hospital Authority, another 16 were confirmed by the Public Health Laboratory Service of the Department of Health and the remaining 64 were directly confirmed by private laboratories or community testing centres.
Among the 108 cases tested, there was no case that involved Delta variant and 104 of them tested positive for Omicron variant. 4 of them could not be determined due to low viral low.
10 (5 men and 5 women aged 22-44) more imported cases tested positive for Omicron sub-lineage BA.22.214.171.124. 56 cases in total in Hong Kong have tested positive for BA.126.96.36.199 so far. Among the cases, 37 of them arrived from U.S., 5 arrived from Netherlands and the others arrived from U.K., Singapore, Canada etc.
2 more cases involving Omicron sub-lineage BA.4 were reported. They involve 2 men (54-year-old man arriving from Mexico and 22-year-old man arriving from U.K.) who received 3 doses and 2 doses of vaccination against COVID-19 respectively. So far, a total of 11 cases involving Omicron sub-lineage BA.4 have been reported in Hong Kong. They arrived from U.K., South Africa, U.S. etc.
3 more cases involving Omicron sub-lineage BA.2.12 were also discovered. All 3 of them received 3 doses of vaccination against COVID-19. So far, Hong Kong has recorded 10 case involving Omicron sub-lineage BA.2.12 in total.
No new cases were found in residential care homes and no new cases were found in schools today. 2 more cases were reported in schools yesterday afternoon involving 2 students via Rapid Antigen Tests.
A total of 9,157 patients have passed away since the beginning of fifth wave and no new deaths were reported by Health Authority yesterday. The gross mortality rate is still maintained at 0.765%.
1 of the 15 environment samples obtained from Lan Kwai Fong Hotel in Kau U Fong tested positive for COVID-19. The sample was extracted from the exhaust fan in Room 3304. The test result of the air filter in Room 3304 could not be determined. As a precautionary measure, all hotel employees and guests must undergo nucleic acid testing today. CHP is following up on guests who have stayed at the hotel on 7th May.
Meanwhile, 4 more students who attended class at Benchmark Trainings school at 13/F, West Exchange Tower, 322 Des Voeux Rd Central, Sheung Wan have tested positive. 3 of the students also visited TamJai SamGor Mixian restaurant in Sheung Wan. So far, a total of 21 cases (19 students and 2 teaching staff) are linked to the cluster outbreak at Benchmark Trainings school. 1 out of 20 environmental samples at Benchmark Trainings school tested positive. In total, there were8 cases were linked to TamJai SamGor Mixian restaurant cluster outbreak including 7 students from Benchmark Trainings school.
Dr. Lau Kai-hin from the Hospital Authority said that more than 533 patients were still being hospitalised. 10 patients were critical condition and 10 were in serious condition.
No patients passed away yesterday. Another 84 patients have recovered and 68 patients were discharged.
Meanwhile, 23,017 employees under Hospital Authority have tested positive for COVID-19. 22,886 of them have returned to work after recovering.
