HK logs 1,841 COVID-19 cases today, 34 more cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 recorded

4th July 2022 – (Hong Kong)  Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced at 4.30pm today that there were 196 imported cases and 1,645 local COVID-19 cases today of which 276 cases were detected during nucleic acid testing while 1,369 cases were recorded via rapid antigen tests and subsequently verified.

Total daily cases recorded today reached 1,841.

Among the 196 imported cases, 145 cases were found at Temporary sampling centre at the airport while 37 cases were found at designated quarantine hotels. 14 cases were identified after the completion of 7-day quarantine at designated hotels.

1 employee and 4 residents were detected in 3 residential care homes for elderly and 2 residential care homes for the handicapped.

600 new cases were detected in 421 schools since 30th June or earlier. The cases involved 485 students and 115 teaching staff. 130 of them were diagnosed today, 133 were diagnosed yesterday, 114 last Saturday (2nd July), 141 last Friday (1st July), and 82 of them tested positive earlier, so an average of more than 100 cases were added per day. Affected classes in 4 schools need to be suspended.

Another 34 new suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 were recorded. 20 of them were local cases of unknown origin. 14 cases were epidemiologically linked to the 20 cases of unknown origin.

In addition, 11 new suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 were detected. One of the new cases was linked to the cluster outbreak at Hotpot Foodie in Kwun Tong. In total, 15 customers and 1 close contact were linked to the cluster outbreak.

A total of 9,192 patients have passed away since the beginning of fifth wave and no new deaths were reported by Health Authority yesterday.

Dr. Gladys Kwan from the Hospital Authority said that more than 787 patients were still being hospitalised. 2 new patients were in critical condition while 4 more patients were in serious condition.

A total of 97 patients have recovered and 90 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. 3 new cases were detected during admission screening. 4 patients in the same ward have been listed as close contacts.

Meanwhile, 24,481 employees under Hospital Authority have tested positive for COVID-19. 24,152 of them have returned to work after recovering.

Meanwhile, 1 female patient tested positive during admission screening at Caritas Medical Centre. 2 more patients in the same ward also tested positive. 5 other female patients were listed as close contacts. In addition, 3 more patients also tested positive at Castle Peak Hospital and 7 more close contacts have been identified.
