5th July 2023 – (Hong Kong) Fans and friends of CoCo Lee, the Chinese-American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress, were shocked and saddened by the news of her passing. The 48-year-old singer had been facing rumours of divorce and struggling with a foot injury in recent months. Today, her family members, Carol and Nancy, announced her passing.
In a statement released to the media, Carol and Nancy expressed their deep sorrow and revealed that CoCo had been battling depression for several years. Despite fighting the illness for a long time, her condition took a turn for the worse, and she tragically took her own life at home on 2nd July. She was rushed to the hospital, but she remained in a coma until she passed away recently.
CoCo Lee was a beloved figure in the music industry, having made her debut 29 years ago. Her talent and dedication had brought joy and delight to her fans, and she had worked tirelessly to promote Chinese music on the international stage. Her family members expressed their pride in her achievements and thanked her fans for their support.
As Coco’s family, they were grateful and honored to have had such an outstanding and compassionate sister. They hoped that she was now in a happier place, free from the pain of depression. They believed that she was now with the angels, and they were committed to taking care of their elderly mother. They asked for everyone’s prayers and support during this difficult time.
CoCo Lee was born Ferren Lee on 17th January, 1975, in Hong Kong. She was the youngest of three children and had a Chinese Indonesian father and a Hong Kong Cantonese mother. Her father passed away before she was born, and she and her sisters were raised by their mother. When she was nine years old, her family moved to San Francisco, where she spent most of her teenage years. She attended Presidio Middle School and Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School.
After graduating from high school, she was offered a recording contract in Hong Kong and decided to pursue her music career full-time. She released her first full-length English-language album, Just No Other Way, in 1999. She was also known for her performances at the Oscars, where she sang “A Love Before Time” from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
CoCo Lee had married Bruce Rockowitz, a Jewish-Canadian businessman and former CEO of Li & Fung, in 2011. The couple had a lavish Jewish wedding ceremony in Hong Kong, and she had released a song, “I Just Wanna Marry You,” to celebrate the occasion. In 2016, she revealed that she had two stepdaughters from her husband’s previous marriage.
