Heavy showers and thunderstorms for 8 consecutive days as Tropical Storm Vongfong moves towards Luzon Strait

16th May 2020 – (Hong Kong)  It was very hot in the afternoon with temperatures over most parts of the territory rose to about 33 degrees Celcius today. Besides, showers are affecting inland Guangdong. The weather will be very hot over the coast of Guangdong tomorrow. Under the influence of a trough of low pressure, the weather over southern China will become unsettled next week.

Tropical Storm Vongfong has weakened into a tropical depression. At 6 p.m., Vongfong was centred about 430 kilometres south of Tainan. It is forecast to move north at about 15 kilometres per hour across the Luzon Strait and weaken gradually.

The first Typhoon Vongfong which may hit Hong Kong this year has weakened from a typhoon to a severe tropical storm today (15th). It is expected to cross the Philippines and gradually weaken in the next 2-3 days. According to the observatory’s predicted path map, Tropical Storm Vongfong will enter Hong Kong within a range of about 800 kilometres today. By tomorrow, it will move 600 to 700 kilometres into Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Observatory pointed out that although Tropical Storm Vongfong will be close to Hong Kong at that time, the possibility of hoisting a Typhoon 1 signal is slim.

It will be mainly cloudy with isolated showers this evening and tomorrow. There will be some sunny periods tomorrow and very hot during the day. Temperatures will range between 28 and 33 degrees Celcius.

There will be occasional heavy showers and squally thunderstorms. Besides, Tropical Cyclone Vongfong will move towards the Luzon Strait and the seas east of Taiwan and weaken gradually in the next couple of days.
