21st May 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory issued an Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 10am this morning, indicating widespread heavy rain across the city. The western region, including Lantau Island, experienced particularly intense rainfall. Reports indicate that multiple areas in Lantau Island were affected by flooding and mudslides, leading to disruptions in traffic along North Lantau Highway and South Lantau Road. Taxis navigating through the flooded areas likened their experience to manoeuvring a boat on land, with water levels reaching above the wheels. Fortunately, preliminary reports suggest no casualties or injuries resulting from the incidents.

Following the mudslides, the Transport Department announced the closure of a section of the South Lantau Road in the vicinity of Ma Po Ping Sewage Treatment Works due to the accumulation of mud and debris. Motorists are advised to utilize the remaining lanes for their commute. The affected area is currently experiencing heavy traffic congestion.
