18th July 2019 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong Observatory recorded the highest temperature in the city of 35°C today. The temperature at Wetland Park in Yuen Long reached 37.9°C. In accordance with the Heat Index set by National Weather Service in the United States, the apparent temperature within the city reached a whopping 44°C while apparent temperature at Wetland Park rose to 51°C.
Apparent temperature is the temperature equivalent perceived by humans, caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed. The measure is most commonly applied to the perceived outdoor temperature.
According to experts, when apparent temperature goes above 50°C, heatstroke cases may escalate if the public engage in outdoor activities. The hot weather coupled with the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) of 10+ will impact our health in the long run.
