Hang Seng Index opens lower as tech shares soften

2nd September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened softer at 9.20am, with the Hang Seng Index slipping 48 points, or 0.19 per cent, to 25,280. Turnover at the open reached HK$8.27 billion. The Hang Seng Tech Index fell 18 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 4,532, while the China Enterprises Index eased 15 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 8,447.

Large-cap technology shares were mostly weaker. Tencent Holdings declined 0.5 per cent, Alibaba Group edged down 0.1 per cent, Meituan lost 0.9 per cent and Xiaomi Corporation dipped 0.2 per cent. JD.com inched up 0.1 per cent, while Kuaishou Technology slipped 0.6 per cent. Against the trend, Lenovo Group advanced about 2 per cent.

Financials were mixed at the open. HSBC Holdings gained 0.5 per cent, whereas AIA Group fell 0.4 per cent, Ping An Insurance eased 0.3 per cent and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing retreated 0.5 per cent. Among auto names, Nio extended post‑results losses, shedding around 2 per cent.
