17th September 2023 – (Asunción) Guillermo Barros Schelotto has been dismissed from his role as the head coach of the Paraguay national football team, as announced by the country’s football association on Saturday. The decision comes in the wake of a lacklustre start to South America’s World Cup qualifiers.
Paraguay’s journey in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup finals began with a goalless draw against Peru, followed by a late 1-0 defeat to Venezuela. These unsatisfactory results have ultimately led to Barros Schelotto, an Argentine, losing his position after nearly two years in charge.
In a brief statement, the Paraguayan Football Association confirmed the culmination of Barros Schelotto’s tenure without delving into further details. His appointment as head coach took place in October 2021, succeeding fellow countryman Eduardo Berizzo. Throughout his tenure, Barros Schelotto managed to secure four victories out of 17 matches under his guidance.
Currently, Paraguay finds itself in the sixth position among the ten nations participating in the South American qualifiers. Their last appearance in the World Cup finals dates back to the tournament held in South Africa in 2010.
