18th April 2024 – (Guangzhou) Guangzhou was enveloped in darkness as a sudden and severe rainstorm hit the city this morning, transforming day into night within moments. The dramatic weather event not only affected the city but also prompted a spectacular sight at the Chimelong Safari Park, where visitors captured videos of zebras and giraffes dashing through the park.

The footage shared by a social media user, showed the animals in a frenzied sprint across the self-drive tour areas of the park. Numerous vehicles carrying tourists were halted along the roads, witnessing this unusual event.

A customer service representative from the Guangzhou Panyu Chimelong Safari Park explained that such animal behaviour is uncommon and typically precedes extreme weather conditions like heavy storms. “The animals sense the impending rain and seek shelter by running towards cover,” the representative stated. Zookeepers and conservation staff were on-site to ensure the safety of both the animals and visitors.

The China Meteorological Administration reported that the sudden darkness over Guangzhou was caused by a rare and extensive squall line, stretching over 600 kilometers. This weather phenomenon, moving eastward at speeds of approximately 60 kilometres per hour, reached Guangzhou around 10 to 11am. The squall line is expected to move towards the Pearl River Delta, affecting cities including Zhuhai, Macao, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Zhongshan, and Dongguan with strong winds and heavy rainfall.
