23rd May 2020 – (Hong Kong) A family arranged for mortuary and burial service of for their member at Global Funeral Parlour owned by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals in Hung Hom recently. However, when they looked at the body, they realised that the body was not their deceased relative. The wrist strap on the body also verified that the identity was different. After conducting further checks, they were shocked to find out that their deceased relative’s body was cremated.
The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals admitted that its Global Funeral Parlour had made an erroneous task and the parlour has immediately notified the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and called the police. It is now discussing appropriate arrangements and providing all assistance with the families of the two affected parties.
The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals responded that it attaches great importance to the incident which caused the family members to bear unnecessary worries and more sufferings. The hospital group reiterated that the issue will be taken seriously, and the employees involved in the mortuary will be immediately suspended, the investigation process will be carried out and the original cause of the incident will be identified. Improvement measures will be implemented to avoid the recurrence of similar incidents. The police said that the Hung Hom Police Station received a report from a funeral agency staff on the 20th of this month, saying that on the 18th of this month, his colleague suspected that the identity of the two bodies was mixed up. The police said the incident did not involve criminal elements.
