3rd October 2026 – (Hong Kong) A freeze‑dried snack stall previously criticised at a food expo has resurfaced at the apm mall in Kwun Tong, advertising a prominent “trial price HK$1 per gram”. With brightly coloured packaging and a high‑visibility counter, the outlet has attracted heavy footfall, but online posts this week urged shoppers to scrutinise the pricing before purchasing to avoid bill shock at the till.
One customer wrote that the “one dollar” message appeared attractive until a small handful of items was weighed on an electronic scale and the total climbed rapidly. The post triggered a wave of neighbourhood discussion, with many comparing the cost to traditional pick‑and‑mix sweets that can be priced at about HK$10 per 100 grams—roughly one tenth of the per‑gram rate quoted at the stall. Several commenters noted that HK$1,000 per kilogram for freeze‑dried confectionery can exceed the price of a full restaurant meal.
Some contributors defended the operator, noting the price was clearly displayed and that purchases were voluntary. However, others argued many people have little sense of weight in grams, while freeze‑dried products can be deceptively dense; filling a bag quickly can push the weight—and final cost—far higher than expected. Observers also reported groups of students stopping to look, prompting calls for parents to remind children to confirm unit prices and check the weight on the scale before committing, so as not to spend a week’s pocket money unintentionally.
