Freespace celebrates fifth anniversary with Asian premiere of “Elements of Freestyle”

20th May 2024 – (Hong Kong) The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) is thrilled to announce the Asian premiere of “Elements of Freestyle” by the renowned ISH Dance Collective, based in Amsterdam. This groundbreaking performance will take place at Freespace, the contemporary performance centre located in the West Kowloon Cultural District, from 28th to 30th June 2024.

In celebration of Freespace’s fifth anniversary, “Elements of Freestyle” presents a dynamic and cross-disciplinary showcase that combines street dance, extreme urban sports, and live music. This electrifying performance not only promises an exhilarating experience for the audience but also aligns with the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024, where urban sports will take center stage.

Freespace, with its versatile and adaptable features, boasts the largest black box theatre in Hong Kong. As part of the venue’s milestone celebration, the ISH Dance Collective has been invited to present this innovative performance that seamlessly blends breakdance, inline skating, skateboarding, freestyle basketball, BMX riding, and freerunning within a theatrical setting. Accompanied by original live electronic and orchestral music performed by acclaimed cellist Annie Tangberg and violinist Vera van der Bie, the performance showcases meticulous scenographic design.

The timing of “Elements of Freestyle” also resonates with the Paris Olympics 2024, where urban sports will make their debut, including breakdancing along with other urban disciplines such as BMX freestyle, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing.

Directed and choreographed by Marco Gerris, Artistic Director of the ISH Dance Collective and former jury member of the TV reality show “So You Think You Can Dance” (SYTYCD), the performance features a stellar cast of accomplished artists:

  • Arnold Put, a multi-award-winning breakdancer
  • Denden Karadeniz, a professional dancer combining breakdance and contemporary dance, SYTYCD participant, and recipient of the Young Amsterdam Award
  • Shane Boers, a member of the Hustle Kidz Crew, who has won the Red Bull BC One Cypher Holland twice
  • Bart van Der Linden, a world champion freerunner
  • Siebe van de Spijker, a freerunner and six-time Dutch Speed champion
  • Dez Maarzen, a ten-time Dutch BMX champion
  • Michael van Beek, a basketball freestyle juggler who has appeared in various theatre and circus performances
  • Pim Wouters, a skateboarder and 3rd place winner of NK Miniramp
  • Sven Boekhorst, an inline skater and Triple Crown winner of the X-Games, Gravity Games, and World Championships in 2000
  • Jelle Briggeman, an inline skater with impressive titles from competitions including FISE and Winterclash

In addition to the stage performances, the ISH Dance Collective’s artistic team will lead three workshops catering to both experienced practitioners and children. On 26th June (Wednesday), Denden Karadeniz and Sven Boekhorst will conduct a professional workshop on contemporary x breakdance floor work for dancers aged 16 and above, as well as a session on inline skating techniques for skaters aged 14 and above. Furthermore, Marco Gerris will lead a creative movement workshop inspired by street dance for children aged 9 to 12 on 29th June (Saturday).
