FREEDOM HONG KONG raises HK$15 million in over 2 hours to organise campaigns/worldwide street rallies to expose HK police brutality

12th August 2019 – (Hong Kong) The crowdfunding target of 1 million USD has been met in two hours after FREEDOM HONG KONG published their crowdfunding campaign.

This group launched a crowdfunded project on 25 June 2019 to publish full page advertorials in major newspapers worldwide containing open letter on Hong Kong’s struggle against the Extradition Bill during the G20 Osaka Summit 2019. They managed to raise over HK$6.7 million (US$857,000) in nine hours, exceeding the fundraising goal by 1.2 times.

The same group started a new campaign yesterday targeting US$1 million (HK$7.8m) to organise major street rallies all over the world on 17th August to expose the violence and alleged crimes committed by police on 11th August.

The group also supported a gathering organised by university students at Chater Garden on 16th August. 11 local university student unions have joined forces to organise a gathering at Chater Garden on 16th August with the slogan ‘Alliance of United States, United Kingdom and Hong Kong, sovereignty lies with the people‘. Apart from making their five anti-extradition demands, the students will also call upon United States and United Kingdom to propose bills to impose sanctions on government officials who allegedly damaged the autonomy of Hong Kong.

In just over 2 hours, FREEDOM HONG KONG raised HK$15 million, almost double of the targeted amount and they have stopped receiving new donations.

FREEDOM HONG KONG expressed that they were able to raise more funds more quickly due to public outcry triggered repeatedly by the government. When the campaign ends, they will publish an audit report detailing their financial proceedings.
