5th June 2023 – (Hong Kong) Police announced today that four men have been arrested for computer misuse related to the cancellation of organ donation registrations. Authorities have stated that a press conference will be held later today to provide more details. The incident has sparked widespread public concern, with some citizens worried about its potential impact on local organ donation distribution.

The victims include government officials, lawmakers, and celebrities. Among them was a 19-year-old student. The suspects are accused of using the stolen data to cancel organ donation registrations without the victims’ consent.

The Hong Kong government has been in discussions with mainland China to establish a permanent mechanism for organ transplantation assistance. Last month, the government reported that there had been an unusually high number of cancellations of organ donation registrations, with 74% of cancellations in a single month being deemed invalid. The cancellation figures include cases where individuals cancelled their registration without having registered in the first place, as well as cases of repeated cancellations. The government has described such behavior as “suspicious” and called on relevant authorities to investigate.

The four men arrested are believed to have been involved in the cancellation of organ donation registrations through computer misuse. The case is still under investigation, and further details are expected to be released at the press conference to be held later today.
