First case of reported death involving a 61-year-old patient resulting from viral pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan


11th January 2020 – (Hong Kong) Since mystery viral pneumonia outbreak took place in Wuhan, Hong Kong and the local government have taken extra precautionary measure to contain the spreading of the virus. The Mainland’s expert group has preliminarily determined that the pathogen of the cluster of viral pneumonia cases occurring in Wuhan is a kind of novel coronavirus. The relevant Mainland laboratory has detected a novel coronavirus and obtained the whole genome sequence of the virus.

As at 12am today, Wuhan Municipal Health Commission announced that 2 out of the 41 patients affected have been discharged while one has passed away. 7 of them were still serious condition while the rest remained stable. The patients were in close contact with around 739 people of whom 419 were medical staff. They were all under close monitoring.

The deceased was a 61-year-old patient who used to purchase stocks regularly from Huanan Seafood Fishery Wholesale Market. He was on ECMO life support before he was pronounced deceased on 9th January. He suffered from septic shock, body parts failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome before he passed away.

Since 3rd January, there have been no new cases of viral pneumonia.
