23rd September 2023 – (Hong Kong) Lamma Power Station, located on Lamma Island, experienced a Level 2 fire incident in the early hours of today. At 5.04am, a coal conveyor equipment suddenly caught fire, accompanied by the sound of an explosion. Staff members promptly reported the incident for assistance. The fire department responded swiftly, deploying one water hose and a team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. However, as of nearly 7am, the fire had not yet been fully extinguished. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far, and the island’s power supply system remains unaffected.
This is the second fire incident to occur at the power station within a span of seven months. On 26th February, at around 3pm, a fire broke out in a decommissioned gas turbine unit during equipment dismantling work. Hongkong Electric’s fire brigade promptly initiated firefighting efforts, and with the assistance of the Fire Services Department, the fire was brought under control by approximately 5pm.
