Fire breaks out at Ko Chi House in Yau Tong, injuring male occupant, 50 residents evacuated (Updated: 11.30am)

5th December 2023 – (Hong Kong) At 8am today, a fire erupted in one of the units at Ko Chi House, located in the Ko Yee Estate of Yau Tong. Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene after receiving the report and deployed a team equipped with hoses and smoke hoods to combat the blaze. Their prompt action led to the successful extinguishing of the fire.

The male resident of the affected unit sustained burns and was reported to be in critical condition, classified as third-degree burns. He was immediately transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance for urgent medical treatment.

Amidst the chaos, approximately 50 individuals residing in the building were safely evacuated, descending from their respective floors.

According to reports, when the fire brigade arrived and forced entry into the house, the male homeowner allegedly said to the rescue personnel, “I want to burn myself to death.” He suffered severe burns to his face and limbs and was transported by ambulance to Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, and the case is being classified as an “attempted suicide” for further follow-up.
