Fire at Istanbul nightclub during daytime repair work claims 29 lives, state media reports


2nd April 2024 – (Istanbul) A devastating fire broke out at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, during daytime repair work, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 29 lives, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The Istanbul governor’s office confirmed that an additional eight people sustained injuries, with seven of them in serious condition.

The fire originated in the Besiktas district, situated in the heart of central Istanbul on the European side of the city. Tragically, all of the victims were construction workers involved in the ongoing renovations at the underground nightclub premises, as reported by Anadolu, the Turkish state news agency.

Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc revealed that arrest warrants have been issued for five individuals, including three nightclub managers and one person responsible for the renovation project. The authorities are determined to hold those accountable for their alleged roles in this devastating incident.
