FIFA President Gianni Infantino calls for football’s values to be preserved during CONMEBOL Congress

12th April 2024 – (Asuncion) During the 78th annual congress of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the responsibility of football administrators as custodians of the sport. Infantino specifically highlighted South America’s role as a co-host for the 2030 World Cup, which will coincide with the tournament’s 100th anniversary since its inaugural edition in Uruguay.

The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, with additional matches taking place in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. Infantino expressed his excitement for the unique nature of this event, which he believes will truly unite the world.

Infantino emphasized the magical and unifying power of football, stating that the sport has the ability to bring people from all corners of the globe together with the same passion and emotion. He stressed the importance of protecting and upholding football’s values, not only as executives but also as individuals who have experienced the game firsthand.

The FIFA president expressed his gratitude for the council members who supported the innovative approach of a multi-host format for the centenary World Cup, applauding their “disruptive thinking.” He also extended his appreciation to CONMEBOL for bestowing upon him the South American Football Order of Merit, an honour he considers incredibly prestigious.
