FEHD closes 44-year-old Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar officially today, vendors required to clear their goods and leave by 5pm later

Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar

31st January 2023 – (Hong Kong) Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar has been operating in Sham Shui Po for 44 years but it will be officially closed at 5pm today (31st). Many street vendors rushed to clear their bulk goods, and some citizens came to support their businesses before the closing down.

However, the staff of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) suddenly announced yesterday (30th) that the Bazaar would not be open to the public today. This morning, the staff only allowed vendors to move their goods and prohibited customers from buying. Aggrieved vendors argued with the FEHD staff this morning. The Bazaar will be officially cleared at 5pm later.

At around 9 o’clock this morning, several FEHD staff came to the scene to remind the cloth vendors to clear the market as soon as possible, and locked the iron gate of the Bazaar and only opened the side door for vendors to remove their goods. A notice was posted at the gate. Vendors must register with their ID cards to enter the venue to process the remaining goods, and customers were not allowed to enter for shopping.
