25th May 2023 – (Geneva) Following the news of Tina Turner‘s death on 24th May, fans began gathering outside her estate in Switzerland to pay their respects. Turner had lived in the Algonquin chateau in Kusnacht, on Lake Zurich’s exclusive Goldkueste, for nearly three decades. People brought flowers and candles, and messages of condolence were left among the bouquets. Turner’s music played from a car parked nearby, and fans spoke of their love for the “queen of rock”.
Turner moved to Switzerland in 1995 with her longtime German partner, Erwin Bach, and became a Swiss citizen in 2013 after relinquishing her US citizenship. She was a beloved figure in Switzerland and was hailed as a model citizen, having learned German and passed a civics test and interview to obtain her citizenship. She even went to polling stations for the frequent popular votes held in the country. In 2021, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by Bern university for her “unique musical and artistic life’s work”.
