Midjourney and DALL-E, two AI-powered image generators, were used to create highly detailed and sensational images of Donald Trump’s arrest and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s imprisonment that went viral on Twitter and other platforms.
Despite the fact that manipulating photos and creating fake images is not a new phenomenon, these AI tools are making it easier than ever to generate convincing and detailed images with just a few keystrokes. Experts in misinformation warn that these fake images will only serve to further blur the line between fact and fiction, eroding trust in our systems and the information they provide.
To combat this growing problem, experts call for greater public awareness and education, as well as for social media companies to develop technology that can detect AI-generated images and integrate them into their platforms.
