Explosion rocks apartment building in Harbin, casualties await identification


23rd May 2024 – (Harbin) Harbin, the capital city of China’s Heilongjiang Province, was struck by a powerful explosion on Thursday morning, originating from an apartment on the fourth floor of a five-story building. The incident, which occurred at the intersection of Xiangshun and Gongbin streets in downtown Harbin, has left casualties yet to be officially determined, according to a reporter on site from Xinhua.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the explosion took place shortly after 7am and appeared to be a result of a gas explosion. The blast was so intense that it shattered the balcony of the apartment where it originated, as well as several neighbouring balconies in nearby apartments.

The sound of the explosion reverberated through the area, prompting local residents to flee from the building in a state of panic. Emergency services, including ambulances, public security personnel, and firefighters, swiftly arrived at the location to initiate rescue operations.

At present, the extent of the casualties and the severity of the damage remain unknown, as authorities work diligently to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.
