19th August 2025 – (Washington) European leaders arrived at the White House on Monday to participate in high-level discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and NATO officials, amid ongoing efforts to broker peace in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte was the first to arrive at the South Portico, followed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb are also expected to attend. Ukrainian President Zelensky will meet Trump separately at the West Wing Portico before joining the multilateral talks later in the day.
A military honour guard lined the White House South Lawn, with troops bearing flags from each U.S. state. A red carpet was rolled out as the leaders were greeted by Chief of Protocol Monica Crowley, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the gathering.
The meeting comes amid a backdrop of tense negotiations over Russia’s proposed peace terms. Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested Ukraine cede the Donbas region in exchange for a cessation of hostilities, a proposal widely criticised by European leaders. Ukrainian officials remain steadfast in rejecting any territorial concessions, insisting such deals would undermine their sovereignty.
In Kyiv, emotions ran high as Ukrainians mourned the death of David Chichkan, a 39-year-old artist-turned-soldier who was killed in a Russian drone strike earlier this month. Hundreds gathered in Maidan Square for his funeral, expressing outrage at perceived international pressure on Ukraine to accept peace terms that many view as capitulation.
“We’re being sold out,” said Oleksandra Grygorenko, a mourner from Poltava. “After thousands have died, it seems our sacrifices are being traded away for political convenience.”
The talks in Washington aim to demonstrate transatlantic unity as leaders navigate the delicate balance between diplomatic negotiations and unwavering support for Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron described the meeting as an opportunity to “build peace and ensure justice through Western unity.”
The discussions follow Trump’s recent meeting with Putin in Alaska, which ended inconclusively. Trump has praised his administration’s efforts to engage Moscow, while U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune pledged economic support to pressure Russia into meaningful negotiations.
The day’s agenda includes a bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelensky, followed by a working lunch with European leaders. The talks are expected to address security guarantees for Ukraine, sanctions on Russian energy exports, and strategies to maintain European cohesion in support of Kyiv.
For Ukrainian President Zelensky, the stakes are high. After a contentious previous meeting with Trump, he is now backed by a strong European delegation. “This united front is crucial,” Macron stated, “not only to defend Ukraine but to uphold the principles of sovereignty and international law.”
