Estonia recalls ambassador to Russia

Ambassador to Russia, Margus Laidre.

7th February 2023 – (Vilnius) Estonia’s President Alar Karis has recalled the ambassador to Russia, Margus Laidre, the portal of the Estonian state radio and television ERR said on Tuesday.

“The corresponding decree was signed by the head of state on 6th February,” the post says.

The heads of Estonian diplomatic missions are officially appointed and dismissed by the president.

At the end of January, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russia, in response to a significant reduction in the staff of its embassy in Tallinn, as well as amid the collapse of the entire system of relations with Moscow, downgraded diplomatic relations with Estonia. The Estonian ambassador was ordered to leave the Russia by 7th February. Estonia does not intend to close its embassy in Moscow.

According to media reports citing unnamed sources, Laidre left his residence early Tuesday morning.
