26th January 2025 – (Frankfurt) Elon Musk made a notable virtual appearance at a rally for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Halle on 25th January, expressing his support for the party ahead of the upcoming snap elections. Speaking to a crowd of approximately 4,500, Musk addressed the importance of preserving German culture and values, asserting that “children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents,” in reference to Germany’s Nazi past.
During his address, Musk emphasised that pride in German heritage should not be overshadowed by multiculturalism, which he claimed dilutes national identity. His comments were met with enthusiasm from attendees, who cheered in response to his statement that the AfD represents the “best hope for Germany.”
This latest endorsement follows Musk’s previous controversial gesture during Donald Trump’s inauguration celebrations, which drew comparisons to a Nazi salute. In the context of these remarks, Musk has faced backlash, including condemnation from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who argued that Musk’s support for extreme-right views threatens European democracy.
Musk’s ties with the AfD have raised concerns over potential election interference, particularly as he has previously extended support to various far-right leaders across Europe, including Italy’s Giorgia Meloni. His collaboration with Alice Weidel, the AfD leader, has been particularly scrutinised, especially following their recent discussions on Musk’s social media platform X, where they spoke on a range of topics, including historical associations with Adolf Hitler.
Despite the winter conditions, significant anti-far-right protests took place simultaneously in Berlin and Cologne, drawing crowds of up to 100,000. Activists voiced their opposition to the AfD and its ideologies, highlighting a stark divide in public sentiment in Germany regarding Musk’s endorsements.
Weidel, in her remarks at the rally, echoed Musk’s sentiments, urging her supporters to “make Germany great again,” a phrase that resonates with similar political rhetoric in the United States. As the political landscape heats up ahead of the February 23 elections, Musk’s involvement continues to attract both fervent support and vehement criticism
