8th December 2023 – (Hong Kong) In a tragic incident yesterday morning, an elderly woman surnamed Cheng (94 years old) was struck by a school bus carrying students while crossing the road. The incident occurred at around 8am as the bus was navigating a turn from Hai Tan Street in Sham Shui Po onto Kweilin Street. The driver, allegedly unable to bring the bus to a stop in time, collided with Mrs. Cheng, resulting in her falling unconscious. She was promptly rushed to the hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries at 7.33pm today.
Law enforcement officials, following a thorough investigation, have arrested the driver, surnamed Leung (71 years old), on suspicion of “dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to another person.” However, Mr. Leung was subsequently released on bail pending further inquiries and is required to report to the authorities in mid-January next year.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the need for utmost caution and vigilance on the part of drivers, especially when operating vehicles carrying vulnerable passengers such as schoolchildren. The safety and well-being of pedestrians must be prioritised at all times to prevent such tragic accidents.
Authorities are expected to conduct a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the collision to ascertain the factors contributing to the incident. This review will likely involve analysing the driver’s actions, examining road conditions, and assessing any potential vehicle malfunctions. The aim is to determine the root causes and identify any necessary measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
