12th September 2026 – (Hong Kong) An elderly couple were found dead in their Ma On Shan flat after neighbours reported a foul smell and firefighters forced the door, with Sha Tin crime officers taking the twin-death inquiry even though early signs point away from foul play.

Police received a report at about 8pm yesterday, 11th September, that a unit in Heng Yat House at Heng On Estate had been giving off an unusual odour for several days. Firefighters broke in and discovered two bodies lying in the living room. The case was classified as discovery of bodies and passed to Sha Tin District Crime Unit.

Sources identify the residents as a 72-year-old man surnamed Tsang and his 74-year-old wife surnamed Liu. The pair lived alone and did not share the flat with other family members. Neighbours who noticed the smell in recent days alerted security staff and then contacted police.

Officers found no suicide note at the scene. A pathologist examined the bodies and reported no suspicious wounds. Investigators also established that both had medical histories of illness. Police say they initially believe there is no criminal element, but because two people died together the crime unit is handling the follow-up. Exact causes of death await post-mortem examinations.

Undertakers removed both bodies at about 2am today, after which officers gradually left the block. The overnight clearance closed the first phase of scene work at Hang Yat House while the dual-death file remained with specialist investigators.
