Education Bureau warns of bogus phone calls impersonating staff members

19th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Education Bureau (EDB) issued a warning today urging schools and the general public to remain vigilant following reports of a fraudulent phone call claiming to originate from an EDB staff member.

In recent days, the EDB has received multiple reports from schools regarding a phone call where the caller falsely identifies themselves as an EDB staff member. The caller informs the school that the Under Secretary of the EDB will be conducting an inspection and requests the school to make necessary arrangements, including providing a mobile number for further communication.

The EDB emphatically asserts that no such phone calls have been made by any of its staff members. Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, the EDB has promptly reported the incident to the Police for investigation.

In light of this development, the EDB advises the public to exercise caution and remain wary of suspicious phone calls. It is crucial not to disclose any personal information or engage in any transactions requested by unknown callers. Individuals who have fallen victim to such scams are strongly encouraged to contact the Police immediately for assistance.
