12th February 2024 – (Turin) In an intense clash during the semifinals of the “Turin – GPFIE “Trofeo Inalpi” 2024″ Foil Grand Prix tournament in the early hours of Monday morning, Edgar Cheung Ka-long, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, displayed exceptional composure and determination. Despite initially trailing American fencer Nick Itkin by a score of 11-14, Cheung, known for his unwavering spirit, mounted a remarkable comeback, scoring four consecutive points and securing a thrilling 15-14 victory to advance to the final.

In the gold medal match, Cheung faced off against his Czech opponent, Alexander Choupenitch. Adopting an aggressive strategy, Cheung dictated the pace of the game for the majority of the match. Asserting his dominance, Cheung emerged triumphant with a score of 15-11, defeating a formidable adversary and claiming the prestigious championship title.

In the final match against Choupenitch, ranked 13th in the world, Cheung adjusted his strategy and opted for an aggressive approach. With a record of five wins out of their previous seven encounters, including a victory over Choupenitch in last year’s World Championships, Cheung held a psychological advantage. He began the final match with a commanding lead, securing three consecutive points and gradually widening the score gap to 11-5. Despite Choupenitch’s attempts to change the momentum by switching swords, Cheung maintained his dominance, extending his lead to 13-7. Although Choupenitch made a valiant effort to catch up, Cheung emerged victorious with a final score of 15-11. It was an impressive triumph for Cheung, who sported a new hair colour, adding a touch of flair to his gold medal achievement.

This victory marks Edgar Cheung Ka-long’s first-ever gold medal in a Grand Prix fencing tournament. Previously, he had won two silver medals and one bronze medal in such events. Achieving the championship title in a Grand Prix tournament represents a significant milestone in his career, unlocking a new level of accomplishment. Moreover, this victory serves as his first title of the season, following his last podium appearance at the Istanbul World Cup in November of the previous year, where he secured a silver medal.
