Earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 occurs in Guangdong Province, HK Observatory receives reports of felt earth tremors by local residents

5th February 2023 – (Hong Kong) The China Earthquake Network Centre announced that an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale occurred in Sanshui District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province on Sunday (5th) morning, with a focal depth of only 8 kilometres.

Meanwhile, initial analysis from the Hong Kong Observatory indicated that an earthquake of magnitude 3.2 has occurred at 11:38 a.m. on 5 February 2023 (Sunday) near coast of Southeastern China. The epicentre is located near 23.27N, 112.95E, about 36 kilometres west-northwest of Guangzhou. (About 170 kilometres northwest of Hong Kong.)

The Observatory received reports of felt earth tremor by local residents. It received over ten locally felt reports of minor shaking, the duration of which was a few seconds. Initial estimate gave a local intensity of III (three) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, that is felt indoors. Vibration like passing of light trucks.
