25th August 2026 – (Taipei) A magnitude 5.8 earthquake was recorded off the southeastern coast of Taiwan at 3.00pm today, as confirmed by the Central Weather Administration. The earthquake’s epicentre was situated at sea, approximately 48.0 kilometres east-southeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 13.1 kilometres beneath the surface.
The strongest tremors were experienced in Taitung County, where the quake registered an intensity level of 4 on Taiwan’s seven-tier intensity scale. Several other areas also felt the effects, with Hualien County, Chiayi County, Yunlin County, Tainan and Chiayi City all recording an intensity level of 3.
No damage or injuries have been reported following the event. According to the Central Weather Administration guidelines, alerts are issued to locations expected to experience at least Level 4 intensity for earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or above, and Level 3 intensity for those of magnitude 6.5 or greater. The situation is being monitored for any further developments.
