10th June 2023 – (Hong Kong) A video captured on June 10 shows a driver in a white sedan pulling out of a parking lot onto Tung Chau Street near the intersection with Yen Chow Street in Sham Shui Po. The driver fails to yield to oncoming traffic and nearly causes an accident. But what is even more alarming is that the driver pulls out their phone and starts filming while waiting at a traffic light. As the light turns green, the driver even takes both hands off the steering wheel to make faces at the camera, while still driving.

The incident raises serious concerns about distracted driving and the dangers it poses to other drivers and pedestrians. The Hong Kong Advanced Drivers Association has previously warned drivers to keep both hands on the wheel at all times and to prepare themselves before driving. According to the Road Users’ Code, drivers are not allowed to hold mobile phones or other electronic devices while driving, nor can they place the devices between their head and shoulders.

Under Hong Kong’s Road Traffic Ordinance, careless driving can result in a maximum penalty of six months’ imprisonment, while dangerous driving can result in up to three years’ imprisonment.
