5th September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Police received a report at 10.37am that two private cars had collided on the westbound Island Eastern Corridor near the North Point Ferry Pier. When emergency crews arrived, one driver was found unconscious and was taken by ambulance to Ruttonjee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12.08pm. Initial accounts at the scene suggested the possibility that a driver may have fainted before the crash.
The Transport Department announced that, due to the collision, some lanes of the Island Eastern Corridor towards Central near the pier remained closed, with motorists limited to the remaining lanes. As at 12.42pm the lanes had not yet reopened, and intermittent closures were implemented at the Eastern Harbour Tunnel’s exit towards Hong Kong Island, causing congestion in the area.
Images circulating online showed airbags deployed in a black private car, while a white private car had a significant dent along its right side. Officers conducted an on‑site investigation into the sequence of events, and it is understood that police provided cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the unconscious driver before he was transported to hospital.
