3rd July 2024 – (London) Marketa Vondrousova, the reigning women’s singles champion, suffered a shocking defeat in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships. The unseeded Czech player, who claimed her first Grand Slam title here just a year ago, fell to Spain’s Jessica Maneiro in a straight-set loss on Tuesday.

Vondrousova, 25, expressed disappointment after the match, stating, “It’s tough to go out defending the title. I was really nervous from the morning. She was playing good tennis while I wasn’t at my best.” Maneiro, ranked 83rd in the world, had never won a Grand Slam main draw match before. She will now face compatriot Cristina Bucsa in the second round.

In another upset, the men’s singles sixth seed Andrey Rublev was ousted by Argentina’s Francesco Comesana in a hard-fought four-set match. Comesana triumphed with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, and 7-6(5), sending Rublev packing in the early stages of the tournament.

On the brighter side, women’s singles world No.1 Iga Swiatek and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic sailed through their opening matches. Swiatek dominated her opponent, Sofia Kenin, with a straight-sets victory, while Djokovic, who recently underwent knee surgery, comfortably defeated qualifier Via Kopriva with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic expressed satisfaction, stating, “I didn’t know how I’m going to feel on the court and how my knee is going to hold up. But I’m very happy with the way I felt, with the way I played, with the way I moved. For an opening match, I couldn’t ask for a better start.”
