3rd October 2026 – (Hong Kong) Law enforcement recorded 14 investment fraud cases over the past fortnight, with every victim aged under 30 and combined losses exceeding HK$6.6 million, according to police.
One of the cases involved a 25‑year‑old woman who met a man on a dating app claiming to be an “investment expert”. After nearly two months of frequent conversations designed to build trust, he gradually introduced the idea of cryptocurrency investing and repeatedly showcased supposed profits to convince her.
The scammer then sent a link to a counterfeit investment site, instructing her to open a “crypto wallet” on the bogus platform and coaching her step by step on depositing funds, buying coins and operating trades. Believing the process was legitimate, she transferred more than HK$1.4 million over just 12 days, only to find she had been defrauded and the money was gone.
