19th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Company Registry has temporarily suspended its e-Search Services of the e-Services Portal after discovering a potential data leak, officials announced today. The emergency maintenance is expected to be completed by Sunday, 21st April, with a possibility of earlier resolution, at which point the registry has committed to promptly notifying the public.

During routine checks, the risk of personal data exposure was identified, leading to the immediate suspension of the electronic search function to allow for urgent system repairs and a thorough investigation. Despite the preliminary investigations, no actual data breaches have been reported as of yet.

In response to the incident, the Company Registry has escalated the matter to several high-level authorities, including the Security Bureau, the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data. These measures underscore the seriousness with which the incident is being treated and the commitment to safeguarding user data.

Services other than the electronic search functions on the e-Services Portal, such as electronic filings and the monitoring services, remain unaffected. The Company Registry assures its users that these services continue to operate securely and reliably.

A spokesman for the Company Registry said, “The Company Registry is very concerned about the incident. Initial investigation revealed that there was no reported case of leakage of personal data. For prudence’s sake, the Company Registry has suspended the e-Search Services in order to conduct urgent maintenance and relevant investigation. The Company Registry has reported the case to the Security Bureau, the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data. Other services of the e-Services Portal, such as e-Filing and e-Monitor, are not affected. The Company Registry will resume the services affected as soon as possible.”

The Company Registry and its system contractor strive to resume the online services as soon as possible. For enquiries, please contact the CR Help Desk Support Service Team (Tel: 8201 8273; email: [email protected]).
