Daily COVID-19 cases in HK continue to climb to 2,815, 10 more cases recorded at HK Buddhist Hospital


6th July 2022 – (Hong Kong)  Dr. Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced at 4.30pm today that there were 143 imported cases and 2,672 local COVID-19 cases today of which 1,021 cases were detected during nucleic acid testing while 1,651 cases were recorded via rapid antigen tests and subsequently verified.

So far, a total of 1,246,463 COVID-19 cases have been reported in HK so far.

Total daily cases recorded today reached 2,815.

Among the 143 imported cases, 49 cases were found at designated quarantine hotels. 15 cases were identified after the completion of 7-day quarantine at designated hotels. 50 of the imported cases arrived from U.K.

2 tested positive in 1 residential care home for the handicapped today. Around 60 others have been listed as close contacts.

239 (comprising 193 students and 46 teaching staff) new cases were detected in 209 schools today.

Another 19 newly suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 were recorded. 16 of them were local cases of unknown origin. 3 of them were epidemiologically linked to previous cases.

In addition, 22 newly suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 were detected today. Two of the new cases involving employees were linked to the cluster outbreak at Hotpot Foodie in Kwun Tong. 7 of them were local cases of unknown sources and some of the family members of 7 cases were infected.

A total of 9,193 patients have passed away since the beginning of fifth wave and 1 new death was reported by Health Authority yesterday.

Dr. Gladys Kwan from the Hospital Authority said that more than 830 patients were still being hospitalised. 1 new patient was in critical condition while 1 more patient was in serious condition.

A total of 108 patients have recovered and 90 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. 3 new cases were detected during admission screening. 4 patients in the same ward have been listed as close contacts. The total hospitalised cases since the beginning of June have increased from around 400 to more than 800.

A COVID-19 infected 71-year-old elderly woman with chronic illnesses passed away on 5th July.

Meanwhile, 24,590 employees under Hospital Authority have tested positive for COVID-19. 24,251 of them have returned to work after recovering.

Dr. Kwan announced yesterday that a male patient and 3 employees tested positive at Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital. She added that 1 more outsourced cleaner and 9 more patients tested positive today. Total cases have increased to 14.
