Daily COVID-19 cases in HK breach 3,000 mark, 42 newly suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 found

7th July 2022 – (Hong Kong)  Dr. Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced at 4.30pm today that there were 172 imported cases and 2,856 local COVID-19 cases today of which 948 cases were detected during nucleic acid testing while 1,908 cases were recorded via rapid antigen tests and subsequently verified. Dr.Chuang added that cases are expected to surpass 6,000 per day in one to two weeks’ time.

So far, a total of 1,249,491 COVID-19 cases have been reported in HK during the fifth wave.

Total daily cases recorded today reached 3,028.

Among the 172 imported cases, 98 cases were found at the airport while 57 cases were found at designated quarantine hotels. 17 cases were identified after the completion of 7-day quarantine at designated hotels. 49 of the imported cases arrived from U.K., 15 arrived from Singapore and 13 arrived from the United States.

1 employee tested positive in 1 residential care home for the handicapped while 2 residents and 1 employee tested positive at a residential care home for the elderly today. Around 21 residents at the residential care home for the elderly need to be quarantined.

201 (comprising 163 students and 38 teaching staff) new cases were detected in 180 schools today. Two respective classes at one kindergarten in Aberdeen and Ma On Shan Ling Liang Primary School need to be suspended for 1 week due to cluster outbreaks.

Another 42 newly suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 were recorded. 28 of them were local cases of unknown origin. 14 of them were epidemiologically linked to previous cases.

In addition, 17 newly suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 were detected today. 2 of them were local cases of unknown sources.

A total of 9,194 patients have passed away since the beginning of fifth wave and 1 new death was reported by Health Authority yesterday.

Dr. Gladys Kwan from the Hospital Authority said that more than 861 patients were still being hospitalised. 2 new patients were in critical condition while no patients in serious condition.

A total of 99 patients have recovered and 86 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. 1 new case detected during admission screening. 2 patients in the same ward have been listed as close contacts.

A COVID-19 infected 79-year-old elderly woman with chronic illnesses passed away on 6th July. The patient was unvaccinated.

Meanwhile, 24,632 employees under Hospital Authority have tested positive for COVID-19. 24,314 of them have returned to work after recovering.

1 male patient at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital tested positive. 6 patients in the same ward and 1 nurse also tested positive. 5 of them have been under quarantine while the others are under home quarantine.

Dr. Kwan also announced that 2 more male patients aged 40 and 51 respectively tested positive at Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital. So far, total cases have increased to 12 patients and 4 employees.
