Daily COVID-19 cases breach 2,000 mark today, 15 new suspected cases of Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 added


29th June 2022 – (Hong Kong)  Dr Albert Au from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced at 4.30pm today that there were 155 imported cases and 1,849 local COVID-19 cases today. 788 of the local cases were detected via nucleic acid testing while 1,061 cases were detected via Rapid Antigen Tests.

Total daily cases recorded today reached 2,004.

In total, COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong have reached 1,230,808.

Among the 155 imported cases, 65 cases were found at Temporary sampling centre at the airport while 63 cases were found at designated quarantine hotels. 27 cases were identified after the completion of quarantine at designated hotels.

New cases were detected in 1 residential care home for the handicapped and 2 residential care homes for elderly. A total of 2 residents and 2 employees have tested positive.

217 new cases were detected in 186 schools today. Classes in 3 schools have reported cluster outbreaks.

Another 25 new suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 were recorded. 13 of the cases were of unknown origin. Another 10 cases are close contacts of the 13 cases of unknown origin. 2 more cases were epidemiologically linked to previous cases.

In addition, 15 new suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 were detected. 3 of them were imported while 4 were local cases of unknown sources.

A total of 9,186 patients have passed away since the beginning of fifth wave and no new deaths were reported by Health Authority yesterday.

Dr. Lau Ka-hin from the Hospital Authority said that more than 671 patients were still being hospitalised. 1 new patient was reported to be in critical condition and 1 new patient was in serious condition.

A total of 80 patients have recovered and 65 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. 2 new cases were detected during admission screening. 3 patients have been listed as close contacts.

Meanwhile, 24,298 employees under Hospital Authority have tested positive for COVID-19. 24,012 of them have returned to work after recovering.

In addition, 1 88-year-old female patient tested positive for COVID-19 during admission screening at Tseung Kwan O Hospital. 2 more patients in the same ward also tested positive and 2 close contacts were identified.
