Daily cases in HK continue to surge to 2,358 today, 28 cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 detected


30th June 2022 – (Hong Kong)  Dr Albert Au from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced at 4.30pm today that there were 155 imported cases and 2,196 local COVID-19 cases today.

Total daily cases recorded today reached 2,358. This is the second day where total cases exceeded 2,000.

In total, COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong have reached 1,233,166.

Among the 162 imported cases, 74 cases were found at Temporary sampling centre at the airport while 70 cases were found at designated quarantine hotels. 18 cases were identified after the completion of quarantine at designated hotels.

8 new cases were detected in 7 residential care homes.

192 new cases were detected in 148 schools today. A cluster outbreak was reported in one class in Fanling Kau Yan College. The class must be suspended for 1 week.

Another 8 new suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.2.12.1 were recorded. 6 of the cases were of unknown origin. The remaining 2 cases were family members of the 6 cases.

In addition, 28 new suspected cases involving Omicron sub-variant BA.4 or BA.5 were detected. 15 of them were imported while 9 were local cases of unknown sources. 1 of them was epidemiologically linked to one of the 9 cases of unknown sources.

A total of 9,188 patients have passed away since the beginning of fifth wave and 2 new deaths were reported by Health Authority yesterday.

Dr. Lau Ka-hin from the Hospital Authority said that more than 692 patients were still being hospitalised. 1 new patient was reported to be in critical condition and 1 new patient was in serious condition. 2 of the new deaths involved 85-year-old and 98-year-old female patients who lived with family members. One of them received 2 vaccination doses while the other deceased patient was unvaccinated. Both of them suffered from chronic illnesses.

A total of 89 patients have recovered and 75 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. 2 new cases were detected during admission screening. 2 patients in the same ward have been listed as close contacts.

Meanwhile, 24,348 employees under Hospital Authority have tested positive for COVID-19. 24,052 of them have returned to work after recovering.
