9th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) Football enthusiasts in Hong Kong may be treated to a star-studded exhibition match early next year, as the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) explores the possibility of organising a friendly tournament. The event, reminiscent of the 2017 Premier League Asia Trophy, could potentially feature the Saudi Arabian club, Al Nassr, known for its roster of international talents, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mané, Otávio, and Aymeric Laporte.

Although the HKFA has not yet confirmed the participating teams, sources suggest that the organizers are considering Eastern European or Portuguese league clubs to complete the lineup. However, it is unlikely that English Premier League teams will be able to join due to scheduling conflicts with their league fixtures.

The proposed tournament is expected to be held at the cutting-edge Kai Tak Sports Park, marking one of the first major events at the newly constructed stadium. The HKFA and stadium authorities are committed to ensuring the venue’s pristine condition, following the controversy surrounding the “Messi fallout” incident in 2019.

Lawmaker Johnny Ng has expressed his hope that top English Premier League teams will be invited to participate in the exhibition match, believing that the event could significantly boost tourism and economic activities in the area.
