COVID-19 UPDATE – Hong Kong has a total of 50 cases, first patient discharged today, millions return to work in China on 18th Feb


12th February 2020 – (Hong Kong) One novel coronavirus case has been confirmed in Hong Kong today adding to the total of 50 now. The latest patient is a 51-year-old man who works in the same Peking Garden Restaurant  as the 37th female patient who contracted the virus during the hotpot gathering at Lento Party Room in Kwun Tong on 10th February. The patient has good past health and lives in On Tao House, Cheung On Estate, Tsing Yi. He developed fever since 3rd February and consulted a private doctor on 4th February.

The patient sought medical attention at Kwong Wah Hospital on 10th February, admitted for isolation and management on the same day, and was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital today. His respiratory sample was tested positive for novel coronavirus and he is now in a stable condition. The patient had no travel history during the incubation period. His close contact, namely his younger sister, has developed symptoms and will be transferred to hospital for isolation and treatment.

Also, a 25-year-old infected patient who was the 18th case has been discharged from Princess Margaret Hospital today. He became the first person to have fully recovered from the virus. Hospital Authority expressed that there may be more patients discharged tonight or tomorrow.

As at noon today, public hospitals had reported to the Department of Health the admission of 59 patients (32 male and 27 female, aged 20 to 92) in the past 24 hours who met the reporting criteria of severe respiratory disease associated with a novel infectious agent. Specimens of the patients concerned have been sent for testing. Two patients were discharged today while 135 patients are still under isolation.

The Hospital Authority will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.

18th February will mark the official end of the Spring Festival travel period, when millions of people return to places of work or residence after having travelled home for Lunar New Year, said China’s State Council in a news conference yesterday.

Three confirmed coronavirus patients were discharged from hospital today, according to the South Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Singapore’s biggest bank DBS (DBSM.SI)has evacuated 300 staff from its head office on Wednesday as a precautionary measure following a confirmed coronavirus case at the bank, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. Singapore’s relatively high number of cases could be due to its Government’s approach of actively weeding out those affected, while Hong Kong’s relatively low number may mean there could be silent carriers within the community, healthcare experts say.

One of the eight confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in the UK is an accident and emergency worker at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex, according to the British Department of Health.

Total infected cases have reached 45,172 as of 6.30pm today with 1,115 deaths.
