Controversial notice sparks debate over dogs and delivery workers’ access to residential elevators in housing estate

9th December 2023 – (Hong Kong) In a photograph circulating online, a notice displayed in a residential estate has ignited a heated discussion. The notice includes the words “Dogs and delivery workers are not allowed to use the passenger elevators.” This immediately drew comparisons to the infamous sign in the Shanghai’s Huangpu Park that read “Chinese and dogs are not allowed inside,” leading some to perceive it as discriminatory.

Promoting mutual understanding and inclusivity is undoubtedly crucial. The same statement can have vastly different effects depending on how it is presented. In this case, it is believed that the intention behind the estate’s notice was not to target “delivery workers” specifically but rather the act of “delivering goods.” A simple rephrasing, such as “Please use the service elevator for deliveries,” could potentially have avoided any misunderstandings.
