25th April 2024 – (Guangzhou) On 22nd April, the Guangzhou Civil Affairs Bureau sparked public discourse with the publication of its first batch of candidates for 2023 public recruitment directly under its jurisdiction. The list, which included positions at the Guangzhou Municipal Crematory Services Centre, has particularly drawn attention due to the inclusion of graduates from prestigious institutions such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), South China University of Technology, and Guangdong University of Technology.

Among the candidates, a notable applicant is Mr. Lau, a graduate from CUHK with a Master’s degree in Philosophy, specialising in Buddhist Studies. His application for the role of crematory operator has ignited discussions online, with some netizens commenting on the challenging job market that leads highly educated individuals to such unexpected career paths.

The Civil Affairs Bureau confirmed that the recruitment process was conducted in accordance with all regulatory requirements and that these positions are official government posts. Despite the high qualifications of some applicants, industry insiders reported that while there are not many openings for crematory operators, the number of applications received was unusually high. Contrary to some online discussions, the salaries for these positions are not as high as speculated, with only a few reaching up to 10,000 yuan per month.
