Consumer Council marks 50 years with pledge for future in Hong Kong

25th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Consumer Council celebrated its 50th anniversary with a grand cocktail reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event, held today, drew over a thousand attendees including key government officials and consumer rights advocates, all gathered to honour the Council’s significant milestone and its enduring commitment to consumer protection.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and Mr. Clement Chan, Chairman of the Consumer Council. Distinguished guests included the Financial Secretary Paul Chan, Secretary for Justice and former Council Chairman aul Lam, and the President of the Legislative Council Andrew Leung, among other high-profile officials and former leaders of the Council.

In his address, Mr. Clement Chan reflected on the Council’s achievements over the past five decades. He emphasized the shift towards digital consumerism and the Council’s role in adapting to these changes to better protect consumers. “As we embrace the digital economy and borderless markets, our commitment to safeguarding consumer rights remains steadfast. We are geared to continue delivering innovative and practical solutions to the challenges of modern consumption,” said Mr. Chan.

The Chief Executive, John Lee, acknowledged the Council’s contributions to creating a reliable consumption environment conducive to economic growth. “The Consumer Council’s efforts over the years have significantly contributed to a safe and secure marketplace, bolstering consumer confidence and supporting economic vitality. I look forward to their continued innovation and leadership in fostering an exemplary consumption culture,” he stated.

The event also showcased a video tribute to the Council’s dedicated service and milestones, aligning with the anniversary theme, “Smart Consumption · Fuelling the Economy.” The highlight of the reception was a ceremonial ‘Golden Jubilee Fortune Pig’ celebration, symbolizing prosperity and collective aspirations for the future economic success of Hong Kong. This unique ceremony saw key figures, including the Chief Executive and the Council Chairman, embedding coins marked with consumer icons into the ceremonial pig, signifying a unified commitment to revitalizing consumer confidence and the local economy.

Further cementing its role in consumer education, Clement Chan announced significant changes to the Council’s flagship publication, CHOICE Magazine. Starting 2nd January, 2025, the digital version, eCHOICE, will be freely accessible, ensuring that consumers can easily obtain valuable and unbiased consumption information. “This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to adapt to changing consumer behaviours and to promote informed and sustainable consumption choices,” he explained. Physical copies will still be available for free at selected public locations.

The Council also detailed the arrangements for current subscribers, who will continue to receive the magazine throughout 2024, with provisions made for refunds on subscriptions extending beyond the commencement of the free access period.
